How Many Rak'ahs for Tahajjud?
The honest answer surprises people: there is no fixed number. Tahajjud is prayed in pairs, the Prophet ﷺ had a sustainable pattern worth copying, and two rak'ahs is a complete beginning. Here is the evidence and how to choose your number. (For the window you will pray them in, start with tonight's tahajjud time.)
Prayed in pairs: "two by two"
The form is fixed even though the count is not. A man asked the Prophet ﷺ about the night prayer and he said: "The night prayer is two by two; if one of you fears the dawn, let him pray one rak'ah to make what he has prayed odd (Witr)" (Sahih al-Bukhari 990; Sahih Muslim 749). So the building block is a pair: two rak'ahs, salam, then another pair if you wish. You never pray a long unbroken block of three or four as Tahajjud — pairs, always pairs.
The Prophet's ﷺ practice: eleven, including Witr
Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, was asked how the Prophet ﷺ prayed at night in Ramadan, and she said he did not pray more than eleven rak'ahs, in Ramadan or outside it — praying four, then four, then three (Sahih al-Bukhari 1147; Sahih Muslim 738). The usual reading: eight rak'ahs of night prayer in pairs, then three of Witr. Notice what the report praises — not the count but the quality: she added that his rak'ahs were so long and beautiful that she would not ask about their length. His eleven were a sustainable eleven, kept across years, not a heroic one-off.
Choosing your number
- Starting out: two rak'ahs + Witr. A complete Tahajjud, keepable every night.
- Settled habit: four rak'ahs + Witr — two pairs, unhurried, with dua between.
- The Prophetic pattern: eight rak'ahs + Witr (three), on nights when sleep and time allow — weekends and Ramadan carry it well.
- More: permitted and reported; let presence, not arithmetic, set your ceiling.
Whatever you choose, end with Witr if it is not yet prayed — the ordering question is covered in Tahajjud and Witr, and the full method in How to Pray Tahajjud. And remember the deadline that disciplines every count: Fajr. Pray what fits before it, with time to spare.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum for Tahajjud?
Two rak'ahs. There is no legislated minimum beyond praying something of the night with presence — two sincere rak'ahs and a dua are a complete Tahajjud. Many scholars also count the Witr that follows within the night prayer's total, but the Tahajjud itself can be as short as one pair.
Did the Prophet ﷺ always pray eleven rak'ahs?
Aisha reported that in Ramadan and outside it, he did not exceed eleven rak'ahs in the night prayer including Witr (Sahih al-Bukhari 1147; Sahih Muslim 738) — eight of Tahajjud and three of Witr in the usual breakdown. It was his sustainable pattern, not a ceiling placed on anyone else.
Can I pray more than eight rak'ahs of Tahajjud?
Yes. Other reports describe more, and the instruction 'the night prayer is two by two' sets the form rather than a total. Pray what you can keep up with presence — the measures of this prayer are consistency and attention, not records.
How many rak'ahs is Witr?
Witr is odd-numbered: one, three, five, seven or nine rak'ahs are all reported. Three is the most common practice; one is valid and is the lifeline on a night when Fajr is minutes away. Pray it after Tahajjud if you wake, or after Isha if you fear you will not.
